My Hometowns (Historical Post)

In Rome and Byzantine period give it local name was Argyropolis (Gerek argyros: "silver" and polis: "city"). The city was known for local wars, the historical commerce road and famous mines.

Between  7th century and  8th century, this area change hands couple times beetween Umayyad-Byzantine and Abbasid-Byzantine

When Caliph Hz. Umar (634-644) conquered and took Erzincan and Erzurum, Gumushane recognized of sovereignty this situation. But this sovereignty not for long, Byzantine take again this area. When Caliph Hz. Osman (644~656), by Emir Habib Bin Mesleme take  Gumushane, Bayburt, Erzurum and Erzincan than Byzantina. When Caliph Hz. Ali (656-661), started Byzantine sovereignty because of internal rebellion.     

When Caliph Abdulmelik (685-705) this area again came under him sovereignty. But when Caliph Velid (705-715) in the conflict between Arabs and Caspians, when the Hazaras succeed. This area again Byzantine sovereignty.
